The Associated Press just reported that “Michael Jackson: This Is It” raked in $2.2 million in the U.S. from its first late-night showings.

To put that in perspective, last weekend’s top movie, ”Paranormal Activity,” pulled in $1.7 million over the entire day Tuesday.

The movie’s debut in Los Angeles was a star-studded affair, filled with fans with Idol affiliations, as evidenced by the photo at right of Adam Lambert and Katy Perry.

Here’s what those Idol or former Idol folks had to say about the film, via Twitter.

David Cook: “Just left the ‘This Is It’ premiere. Great footage of MJ doing what he did best…. Incredible.”

Adam Lambert: “‘This Is It’ was totally inspiring!! I loved seeing the showmanship and hard work of MJ documented for us all.”

Ryan Seacrest: “Mj movie is powerful the singing.. the dancing!! He was a perfectionist…and very funny.”

Paula Abdul: “I’m sitting in the Nokia Theater in awe of the ‘This Is It’ movie! So many emotions are coming up for me. I can’t believe he’s gone. BRILLIANT.”
