American Idol is such a curiously schizophrenic show.
On Top 4 Night, Part 2, a mentor suddenly appears in Harry Connick Jr.
On Top 4 Night, Part 2, Jimmy Iovine, who had been giving in-show critiques for the past two weeks, disappears.

On Top 4 Night, Part 2, Idol decided the remaining singers should sing one very now (aka 2013) song and one “then” (aka very old) song.
And, for some bizarre reason, they decided to close the night with the old songs, which dated from — are you ready for this? — 1926, 1933, 1937 and 1941!!!!
That’s the way to reel in young viewers, Idol.
This show seriously needs to clean house and start fresh with a new set of producers.
But that’s a topic for another day. Let’s get down to the business at hand — who deserves those victory trips back home.
Best of the Night: On Wednesday, Candice Glover did what I expected Kree Harrison to do last week. She took a bottom two finish as a challenge, returned to the stage and delivered two of her best vocals in weeks. Her round one performance of Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” was the best of the night and her second-round performance of “You’ve Changed” wasn’t far behind. Folks, Candice absolutely needs to be in the top three.

Runner-up: Ditto for Angie Miller, who remains way ahead of everyone else left on Season 12 in terms of star quality. The judges gave her a rough time over her first song, “Diamonds.” I thought she did a very nice job of changing up the song. In fact, on a night of rather lackluster song choices, it might have been my favorite match of singer and song all night.
Please keep her: Kree Harrison took the stage twice and delivered two more stellar vocals. Unfortunately, “Stormy Weather” made for a very sleepy final solo performance of the night and found the gal with the country and bluesy tone using neither to her best advantage. Still, if you look back over her Season 12 performances, she’s been far more consistent than the other candidate for the final three. Which brings us to …
Deserves to go home: Amber Holcomb delivered her best vocal of the past two weeks on “Funny Valentine.” Of course, it’s a song she performed in Vegas Week as well. Lots of times, the judges would have chastised a singer for doing that. In the first round, Amber tried to tackle a song by Pink (“Give Me a Reason”) and simply wasn’t up to the task. It was the weakest performance of the night.

Mark knows too little about music to a reviewer for this show. (Although Harry Connick Jr put Randy Jackson in his place last night, and Randy gets to be a judge. So maybe this show really is for amateurs).
Just Give Me A Reason is not a happy go lucky love song. It’s a desperate ballad, crying out to hold on. Amber performed it very well.
Candice and Amber were the best two of the night.
Kree was third.
Angie was last. Her vocals are clearly a cut below the other three.
Angie will win Idol because she’s the best looking and has the best personality of the remaining four. If this was a singing competition instead of a popularity contest, Angie would be going home this week.
Neither Amber nor Candice deserve to go home this week, but one of them will because they’re less popular than the other two.
I won’t follow this blog again, since I disagree with Mark’s review. I agree with everything Dave said except the second sentence. I understood Randy’s comments; Harry actually came off proud, full of himself, and disconnected with the show and its audience. He purposely tried to embarrass the contestants; he is crossed off my book – if he was ever on, lol. Yes this show is for amateurs, this is not a classical music instruction course. Hopefully, his advice will not lead to Kree’s demise.
I agree Dee that Harry Connick is too harsh to be a judge. Simon got away with it, but Harry could never get away with a full season of that.

Harry Connick may have tipped the votes in favor of Kree when he embarrassed Amber and then praised Kree onstage after the latter’s performance. That wouldve been ok if he werent a mentor but its unprofessional and smacks of conflict of interest if you’re a mentor! I agree he was full of himself instead of being supportive & objective. I used to like him but now he’s off my list of nice people.
Randy read it right: Between having 2 songs that are “ok”, he’d rather have one outstanding performance and one thats ok. He said this to Kree who got feedback for BOTH her songs from all 4 judges while Amber’s first song received serious feedback but earned a standing ovation from all 4 judges for her 2nd song. Kree wouldve gone home had Harry ConnickJr not embarrassed Amber and then praised Kree onstage after the latter’s performance. That may have influenced the voting as ppl would remember Amber struggling with Harry’s confronting her. Omg, what a tragedy that was. You can’t favor just one contestant while you’re mentoring. Unprofessional.
