Brooke White, New Idol Music

Jack and White delivers musical delight

0

Earlier this year, I wrote that Lacey Brown had just delivered the Idol musical surprise of the year with a startling good debut EP.

We just got another surprise of the musical delight type, a six-track EP named “Gemini” from Jack and White.

That would be White as in Brooke White, the singer-songwriter who finished fifth on season seven of American Idol.

In Lacey’s case, one had no idea what to expect. She was eliminated in the first week of the finals on Idol season nine, hardly the resume that screams “listen to my music.”

That’s not the case with Brooke, who was brilliant at times on Idol and followed up with a heart-warming and underrated debut album — “High Hopes and Heartbreak” — that I like to refer to as a little ray of musical sunshine.

The surprise is that the followup comes this soon, or in this form.

On “Gemini,” Brooke teams up with Jack Matranga, former guitarist for Self Against City in a classic tale of song-writing session gone good. That’s how the two met, in a song-writing session that was supposed to produce material for Brooke’s second solo album.

Presto: We get a new duet called Jack and White.

Presto: We get a six-track EP of songs they wrote together.

All great? Well, the final track, “Feathers,” sounds more like something you’d hear on Sesame Street. But the rest of the EP is toe-tapping good, especially the title track, “Inside Outside” and “Telephone Games.”

The EP is available now on iTunes.

And here are Brooke and Jack performing “Gemini” live earlier this summer.
