Fans met the final artists to make up The Voice Season 19 cast Monday night.
And while John Legend failed to land the night’s only four-chair turn, the embarrassment of riches that is his team got even stronger.
He lured in a three-chair turn artist in Julia Cooper and also snagged Bailey Rae and James Pyle with nary a fight.
That happened after Team Blake and Team Kelly were already full. Otherwise, Baily Rae and James Pyle surely would not have been one-chair turns.
Here’s a recap, complete with Voice Views’ picks for top performances from Monday’s show.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
The artist: James Pyle, 30, West Hills, Calif.
The song: “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles
Chair turns: John turned as soon as James hit the chorus, giving him the very final spot on Season 19. I don’t think there’s any doubt James would have turned at least three chairs had the other teams not been full. Gwen called him one of the best singers “we’ve heard.” John called it a “masterful performance.” That is was.
RUNNERS-UP:
The artist: Julia Cooper, 21, Poland, Ohio
The song: “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers
Chair turns: Her lilting lyrics inspired quick chair turns from John, Gwen and Kelly in turn. Both Gwen and Kelly praised her unique vocals. John said there’s no one on his team who sounds like her, sparking a dispute with Kelly, who drew comparisions between Julia and four-chair turn recipient Cami Clune, who had already joined Team Legend.
Her choice: Julia Cooper joined Team John.
The artist: Worth the Wait, a trio including a mother and two sisters, Centre, Alabama. The group includes Tara Matthews: 47, Mia Matthews: 15, and Jacy Matthews: 13
The song: “When Will I Be Loved” by Linda Ronstadt
Chair turns: While, the trio has barely launched into the song, showing off their superb harmonies, when they have all four coaches facing in their direction. Gwen called their performance “magic.” And she pitched herself as the fresh coach in the country lane. Kelly vows to push the trio like a choir director. Blake vows to direct them to songs that will allow their harmonies to soar.
Their choice: They opted to join Team Blake.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
The artist: John Sullivan, 32, Denver, N.C.
The song: “Operator” by Jim Croce
Chair turns: Blake turned just as John hiT the chorus. And before he finished that chorus, Gwen turned as well. Blake complimented him on his perfect pitch and story-teller vibe. Gwen said she senses she and John have a lot in common.
His choice: John opted to join Team Blake.
The artist: Skylar Mayton, 15, Grand Rapids, Mich.
The song: “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd
Chair turns: In her bio piece, Skylar begged Kelly’s image to turn. And she’d barely started her audition when Kelly did. Kelly called her performance “awesome” and said she’s “so stoked” to discover Skylar is so gifted at such a young age.
Her choice: Because Kelly was the only coach to turn, Skylar automatically became a member of Team Kelly.
The artist: Lain Roy, 22, Larkspur, Colorado
The song: “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi
Chair turns: He prompted quick chair turns from John and Gwen. Despite a very nice ending, they remained the only turns. Gwen called him a really good singer, but the rest of the feedback got way off track with talk of Berklee and John’s Covid-19 long-distance handshake stick.
His choice: Lain opted to join Team Gwen.
The artist: Emmalee, 20, Clarksville, Tenn.
The song: “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston
Chair turns: Her a cappella opening prompted quick chair turns from John and Kelly. John called her voice lovely and her tone crystal clear. Kelly liked her cool rendition of the song and said it showed her creativity.
Her choice: Emmalee decided to join Team Kelly.
The artist: Baily Rae, 18, Oklahoma
The song: “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger” by Lee Ann Womack
Chair turns: With country coach Blake’s team full, John turns almost immediately. Baily Rae shows off lots of power and soul, but Gwen, surprisingly, did not turn. Blake suggests he might have a steal waiting for Baily Rae in the battle round. John said he loves Bailey Rae’s voice and that she’s the first country artist he’s had the privilege of coaching.
Her choice: Bailey automatically becomes a member of Team John.
The artist: Tori Miller, 26, Siloam Springs, Ark.
The song: “When You Say Nothing At All” by Keith Whitley
Chair turns: Gwen turns as Tori delivers an emotional performance, giving Tori the next to last spot on Season 19. Gwen complimented Tori on a lovely voice. Tori predicted they’d get alone well because they both appreciate a well-placed rhinestone.
Her choice: Since Gwen was the lone coach to turn, Tori landed the last spot on Team Gwen.
NO CHAIR TURNS
The artist: Jered Ming, 32, Honolulu, Hawaii
The song: “Drunk Me” by Mitchell Tenpenny
Chair turns: No one turned, but John complimented him on a powerful tone.
The artist: Apropos, 31, Detriot, Mich.
The song: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye
Chair turns: The coaches said he has a good voice, but needed more dynamics in his performance.
The artist: Neci, 32, Nashville, Tenn.
The song: “God Bless the Child” by Billie Holiday
Chair turns: No one turned for Neci. But John called her a “gifted vocalist.”
