Jay Copeland, Morgan Gruber sparkle on American Idol

American Idol introduced us to 10 more Hollywood-bound singers on Monday’s audition episode.

It was supposed to be the final audition episode of Season 20. But at the end of the show, Idol announced another show has been added Sunday night after the Oscars.

That show will apparently air Sunday night from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. eastern time, after the Oscars.

Will it be a recap? Or more new auditions?

At this point, it isn’t clear.

But this much is certain. I profiled 50 artists who auditioned and earned golden tickets before the season began.

And there are lots and lots of talented artists — many of whom have already released music — who we haven’t met yet.

You can check them out by following the links below this blog.

Now, for Monday’s Top 5 performances.

1. Jay Copeland, 23, Salisbury, Md: He gave up grad school and a fellowship to audition for American Idol. The judges validated that decision by granting Jay one of the three platinum tickets available in Season 20. It’ll allow Jay to skip the first round of Hollywood Week and pick his duet partner for the second round. Jay auditioned with Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” He showed off a strong voice and great stage presence, even if the shouting was a little overdone. Luke Bryan predicted Jay will have the ability to “electrify a crowd.” Lionel Richie said his talent is “off the chain.” More on Jay here.

2. Morgan Gruber, 17, Fombell, Pa.: Morgan told Idol she lives on an 12-acre farm and is tired of “looking at cornfields all day and seeing cows in the yard.” Won’t be a problem during Hollywood Week, because that’s where Morgan’s headed after an impressive, soulful performance of Elle King’s “Can’t Be Loved.” Lionel Richie complimented her a unique sound; Luke Bryan said she’s Top 20 material. Katy called her performance “amazing.”

3. Kaylin Roberson, 23, Raleigh, N.C.: She auditioned with boyfriend Matt Gorman, a guy she met during a photo shoot for one of her releases. They sang an impressive original called “Fast Forever.” And Kaylin brought the song to life as soon as she started singing with a great country sound and oodles of vocal firepower. Luke Bryan says he thinks she has the vocals to challenge HunterGirl, a platinum ticket recipient. Bottom line: Kaylin advanced, boyfriend Matt did not. Kaylin’s reaction: “Part of me is really is excited, part of me hurts.” It was one of the more touching Idol auditions of Season 20. More about Kaylin and the music she’s already released here.

4. Carly Mickeal, 23, Simi Valley, Calif.: She’s a dog groomer who’s also been singing all her life, thanks in part to the inspiration provided by her musician dad. He accompanied her on piano as she auditioned with Elton John’s “Your Song.” Perhaps his presence explained the fact that Carly delivered one of the most assured performances we saw on Monday’s show. Oh, she also showed off a great tone and nice range. Luke Bryan said he sees star potential in Carly, who breezed to Hollywood with three yes votes. More on Carly here.

5. Skylar Maxey-Wert, 23, Lancaster, Pa.: He’s a professional ballet dancer, in Dresden, Germany, no less. Skylar says he grew up in an artistic family and headed to Germany to begin a dancing career right after high school. He auditioned with “For All We Know” by Donny Hathaway, sounded great and performed with emotion. The Idol judges broke out in dance they loved Skylar’s performance so much.

Also earning golden tickets Monday were Tobias Hill, Saylor, Cameron Whitcomb, Emyrson Flora, Sir Blayke.
