Jordin Sparks isn’t getting rave reviews for “Sparkle.” Nor is the film.
But its release last week certainly spurred interest in the soundtrack.
“Sparkle” is number one on Billboard’s soundtrack chart this week, up from three a week ago.
The album also advances from number eight to number three on the R&B chart and all the way from number 42 to number 21 on the Billboard 200.
While the soundtrack is best known for including the last Whitney Houston songs, it’s really a showcase for Jordin.
She has three solos on the album, her “Celebrate” duet with Whitney, and sings on three group numbers with her sisters in the film.
As for the box office, “Sparkle” checked in at number five after its first weekend with ticket sales in excess of $11.5 million. That compares to more than $28 million for last weekend’s most popular movie, “The Expendables 2.”
Elsewhere on the music charts this week:
* It doesn’t appear as though Kelly Clarkson will duplicate her “Stronger” success with “Dark Side,” her latest single. The song actually slipped on the Hot 100 this week (42 to 45). And after reaching the top of the dance/cub play chart last week, it tumbled all the way to eight. “Stronger” topped several Billboard charts at the height of its popularity.
* Speaking of the dance/club play chart, Adam Lambert’s “Never Close Your Eyes” is still climbing. It moves up one spot from seven to six. “Sprectrum” by Zedd now tops that chart.
* Phillip Phillips’ “Home” enjoyed another strong week in terms of digital downloads. It’s number five on the Billboard chart. Two weeks ago, the song hit number one on the same chart. Phillip is also the only Idol whose EP from the show is still on the Billboard 200.
* Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” continues to pick up momentum. The song is up to number 16 on the country chart, though it might have trouble reaching number one now that Taylor Swift has a new tune out. The song jumped eight spots to number 30 on the Hot 100. The album by the same name is back at number two on the country albums chart.
