Kelly Clarkson hosted the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night and created more than a little buzz with her opening monologue.
Kelly, who is from Texas, said producers wanted her to initiate a moment of silence on behalf of those slain in the school shooting last week in Sante Fe.
Well, anyone who has watched Kelly coach on The Voice knows that staying silent isn’t her forte.
And it certainly wasn’t on this night, as a tearful Kelly pleaded with the crowd and viewers at home to do better.
“Why don’t we not do a moment of action?” Kelly said. “Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening? Because it’s horrible.”
Of course, the mood eventually became more celebratory and light-hearted — it was a music awards show after all.
Kelly went for laughs during a medley in which she covered songs from a wide range of the night’s nominees, then returned later in the show to perform “Whole Lotta Woman” from her latest album.
Here’s a photo gallery of Kelly during her first-ever Billboard hosting gig.
