While the reason is still unclear, it marks one of the biggest cast losses in the show’s history.
Kenedi, 17, of Crozet, Va., was one of three singers rewarded with platinum tickets during the audition phase of Season 20.
And Luke Bryan said she “might be the biggest star we’ve ever seen” after she covered Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” accompanying herself on piano.
Ryan Seacrest announced the news during Monday’s Top 24 show, as an explanation for why no voting information appeared when Kenedi’s performance aired.
She released a standing ovation from the judges after performing “Human.” But Idol didn’t air any of the judges’ feedback on that performance.
Kenedi released the following statement on social media about leaving the show.
“For personal reasons, I’m unable to continue on American Idol.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but I know it’s necessary.
“I’m so grateful to American Idol, the judges, the producers, the amazing contestants and all the fans who have supported me.
“Thank you for giving me such an amazing opportunity to share my voice, chase my dreams, feel so much joy and happiness doing what I love, and make lifelong friends along the way.
