Tori Kelly’s “Never Alone,” featuring Kirk Franklin, took the Grammy for best gospel song and performance at Sunday’s early away ceremony.

That spoiled Koryn Hawthorne’s bid to become the first former Voice contestant to win a Grammy.

While the official Grammy show doesn’t begin until 8 p.m. Sunday, most of the awards are handed out in an afternoon ceremony.

Koryn was nominated for her smash gospel hit “Won’t He Do It,” which spent most of 2018 at number one on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart.

In fact, the song set a Billboard record for the most weeks at the top of that chart by a female artist and was still number three on the latest chart.

Koryn’s followup single, “Unstoppable,” is currently number 19 after three weeks on that chart.

That’s the title track from her debut album, which topped the Billboard Gospel Albums chart upon its release.

Koryn auditioned for The Voice at age 16 and wound up finishing fourth in Season 8, behind Sawyer Fredericks, Meghan Linsey and Joshua Davis.

Now 21, she won her first Dove Award for “Won’t He Do It” back in October. Voice Views placed another of her songs, “Down Goes Rome,” on its list of Top 20 post Voice songs of 2018.

The only other former Voice contestant to be nominated for a Grammy is Cassadee Pope last year in the country category for her “Think of You” duet with Chris Young.
