But Kymberli Joye, 26, of Windsor, Conn., is likely the first contestant to express gratitude for becoming a block victim.

On The Voice, one of the superstar coaches can use the block to keep a contestant from deciding to join another coach’s team.

That’s what happened during Kymberli’s blind audition performance of “Run to You,” which aired Monday night.

Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton all turned around. But Kymberli couldn’t pick Jennifer because she had been blocked by Kelly.

“I really didn’t realize Jennifer had been blocked until I finished singing,” Kymberli said during a conference call with the media. “When I saw that, my first reaction was to laugh, just because of Jennifer’s facial expressions.

“I will have to say I was slightly grateful for the block because, going in, I was torn between Jennifer and Kelly if they both turned around. I was like, ‘God, I don’t know how I’m going to choose.’ I like to think God helped me out on that one. He made the choice a little easier.

“It’s a crazy feeling,” she added. “It’s a big thing for a coach to use their block on you. So I was humbled and honored for that.”

To this point, Kymberli’s background has been mostly a background singer. But she said she sees auditioning for The Voice as “stepping into my place in the world,” as other background singers have done through the show.
