Seeing Joana Martinez and Shane Q. land in the bottom three on The Voice results show Tuesday night was hardly a surprise.

Both made it to Monday’s Top 10 show with the help of instant saves because they’d landed near the bottom in fan voting before.

The third singer forced to sing for her Voice life was more of a surprise.

Marybeth Byrd was one of the Voice contestants who turned four chairs during the blind auditions. And she’d been solid throughout the competition.

But when Carson sent seven singers to safety Tuesday, Marybeth was left standing alongside Joana and Shane, setting the stage for the instant save performances.

Here’s how that went.

Shane Q: “Killing Me Softly” — Potentially, a nice song choice for Shane in this situation. And while he started okay, he failed to convey much emotion, his vocal began to waver and the humming lalala ending doomed a performance that needed a much bigger exclamation point — or at least an emotional one — if he was going to have a chance at making the semifinals: Grade: C–

Joana Martinez, “Somebody That I Used to Know” — I’ve been begging to hear Joana sing a more current song. But not this song. The gentle way of putting it would be to say that Joana never settled into the performance. And when you think back on Joana’s time on The Voice, please remember her Monday night performance, not this one. Grade: D+

Marybeth Byrd, “You Are the Reason” — I’m not sure this vocal was quite as good as the very good one Marybeth had delivered Monday night. But she once again reminded us of how wonderful her voice sounds when she’s singing softly with emotion. Like on that ending. And when the last note faded, there was absolutely no question who most deserved the instant save. Grade: B
