Caleb Johnson, Season 11

Meet American Idol contestant Caleb Johnson

The Savannah auditions must have been a reunion of sorts considering the number of Season 10 golden ticket recipients who returned for another shot at the American Idol crown.

Count Asheville, N.C., rocker Caleb Johnson among them.

A year ago, he impressed the judges with his rendition of “Rusty Cage.” At the time, he was identified as a 19-year-old banquet server.

We didn’t see him sing in the Savannah audition, and Caleb might not mind that too much.

He says he was disappointed in his audition.  He nailed his first song, one he messed up a year ago, but forgot the chorus on his second.

Still, he got another golden ticket and says he couldn’t not return for Season 11, calling Idol “addictive.”

He’s a relative newcomer to performing for an audience.  He did it the first time at a talent show when he was a junior in high school, learning to play bass and sing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” in a day.

Caleb says he thinks his unique tone and “crazy range” helps set him apart.

“I have the drive and the passion to make a living at what I want to do, which is to sing,” he says in his golden ticket interview.
