(NBC Photo)His audition: Justin Whisnant, 28, of Bearden, Okla., auditioned with Cole Swindell’s “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey.” A very strong country vocal enticed a chair turn from Adam Levine early in the performance. Blake Shelton eventually turned as well. Adam called Justin “ridiculously good;” Blake talked about a musical relationship that could extend beyond the show. Justin joined Team Blake.

His background: He grew up in a town of 200-300 people and was raised by his grandparents. And since his grandfather was the sound “guy” for their church, he would set up the equipment in the front yard “and we would have a little family concert. I feel privileged to be influenced by that,” Justin says. He started singing in grade school, traveling around to various churches. After high school, he took a job in the oil fields. “I made a good living doing it. But I worked six days a week, hot in the summer, freezing in the wintertime. It completely consumed my life.” He tried doing music, too, until his boss gave him an ultimatum: music or work. He chose music. He plays in a band called Cold Water County and is looking for The Voice to take his music to the next level.

What the show didn’t show:

  • On his website, Justin calls himself a self-taught songwriter and guitar player.
  • While he’s primarily a country singer, Justin says he also likes R&B and soul music and prides himself on his versatility.
  • Cold Water County formed in 2014; Justin provides lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar. The band also includes Clay Perry, Seth Dean, Chance (Denver) Dean and Tommy Griffin.
  • Justin said Cold Water County “came to be really just talking to other musicians in the area and getting together and playing just to see if it would even work. The two Dean brothers — Chance and Seth — were in a band before and it didn’t work out, so they came and started playing for me along with the drummer Clay Perry. My cousin Tommy had been in many bands throughout his musical career and wasn’t playing for anyone at the time, so I asked him to come play for me and he accepted. We have been playing shows ever since.”
  • Prior to Cold Water County, Justin belonged to a band called Oklahoma Sixgun Saints. They released an album that’s no longer available, though some of their music is still available for listening pleasure on ReverbNation. Between bands, Justin said he played lots of solo acoustic shows.
  • You can check out a Cold Water County song — the impressive “Truth or Dare” — on the band’s website, where there’s talk of a debut album. Justin says they were in the middle of cutting that record when The Voice opportunity came along, so it’s “on the backburner for now. “It’s kind of just a waiting game to see what lies ahead for me with the show,” Justin says. “I would like to release it at some point. You guys will just have to stay tuned to see what happens post show.”
  • His message to fans: “Never stop being. Inspired or inspiring someone. Everything great has its start somewhere.”
  • On iTunes: Just his performance from The Voice.
