Brajawn Upshaw is among the artists who auditioned for the new season of American Idol.

Idol kicked off Season 23 on March 9 with Carrie Underwood joining Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan at the judges’ table.

Audition episodes will continue to air each Sunday until Hollywood Week begins.

Here’s more about Brajawn.

* He’s a 22-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio, now living in Temple, Ga.

* He works as a mail handler and his Idol audition came as something of “an unexpected surprise,” he told his hometown newspaper.

* That’s because his mother Tasha, realizing her son’s love of music, signed him up for his initial audition with the show.

* Brajawn told the newspaper he’s loved music since being introduced to it by his third-grade teacher.

* Since then, he’s been involved in choir, in an acapella group and taken dance and acting lessons.

* Brajawn also apparently writes music. In a Jan. 19 social media post, he writes that he was performing a song of his own for the first time.

* He has more than 62,000 followers and 650,000 likes on his TikTok.

* Idol leaked a portion of his audition. He says he was inspired by watching a documentary of Luke Bryan in which his father encouraged him to follow his dreams, promising he could return home to the family farm if it didn’t work out.

* Brajawn sang “Lovely” by Billie Eilish and Khalid for his audition and had all three judges applauding by the end of the performance.

* In announcing his Idol audition, Brajawn writes: ” Imagine watching the world go round for years and only having a few things that make you smile. This show was one of those things for me.”
