Her background: She’s a student at Kennesaw State University, pursuing a career in nursing. She’s bi-racial, which she says resulted in an identity crisis for a long as she grew up in the South and endured teasing. But she says music gave her a way to express herself and be “proud of who I am.” She also tried to follow her dad’s advice: “Kill them with kindness.” It sounds as though her scholarship is at risk because of the time commitment required by The Voice, but Brittnee proclaims: “It’s worth it.”
On choosing Usher: “Working with Usher, I’m just super excited. He’s an intelligent person. He knows a lot about this business. He’s a beautiful artist. And he’s so versatile. I want to be an artist like this — that’s versatile and can jump in and out of that pop and R&B (music).”
What the show didn’t show: According to her Voice bio, it was after her grandfather died and she discovered her mother had fibromyalgia that Brittnee put music on the back burner to study nursing. Now that her mother’s condition has improved, she’s decided to give music another chance. On Twitter, she describes herself as a “singer, artist, fashionista, model and one of the coolest chicks you’ll ever know.” On ReverbNation, she classifies her music as R&B, soul and pop. Head there and you can listen to five Brittnee tunes. Be sure to check out “Weatherman.”
In a conference call with the media, she said she’s been working on music in Atlanta for years, “doing talent shows and open mics and upcoming artist showcases and working in the studio with different songwriters and just trying to perfect my craft. And it just gets a little tough sometimes because there’s so much talent out here and I know Atlanta is flooded.” A good friend told her The Voice was looking for talent, and she says she jumped at the opportunity. “It’s really just been a blessing, to be honest,” she added.
On iTunes: Her audition song, and she’s a featured singer on a rap track called “Release” from a 2012 album by Solo.
Update: She lost to Melissa Jimenez in the first battle round; they sang “Give It To Me Right.” Brittnee was then stolen by Adam Levine.
