Carson Daly has visited lots of places to deliver invites to the blind auditions on The Voice.
Season 3’s seventh episode saw him make his first trip to a smog shop.
He went there because that’s where Charlie Rey, 20, of Long Beach, Calif., works.
He works there with his dad. In fact, he says he got his smog technician’s license to provide a break for his dad, who “is working there way too much. I appreciate his sacrifice. I plan to repay him.”
But Charlie’s dreams don’t include working in the smog shop for the rest of his life, partly because he fears the carbon monoxide he breathes in is “taking years off my life and destroying my voice.”
“To take the singing from the garage to the top is something I’ve been dreaming of since I was 8 years old,” he says after being presented with The Voice invite. “It’s the coolest thing ever.”
On the show, he sings Michael Buble’s “Home” well enough to entice Blake and Adam to turn around.
Blake compliments him on his “cool, confident factor” and says “I just want to be part of that.” Adam says he turned around because of the “refined quality in your voice.”
What the show didn’t show: Charlie released a three-song EP in July 2011 that you can find on iTunes. Check out “Marilyn,” the best track, with a bit of a country bent. In his Voice bio, we learn that Charlie is a big fan of the music of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and plays guitar. As for choosing Blake over Adam, Charlie explained that in his post-audition interview with Christina Milian: “The Blake finger,” he says, “that’s killer.” But he’s only partly serious. “Me and dad were talking,” he continued, “and (he said) the person that turns around first is the person with the most faith in you. He (Blake) turned around first. And he had the finger. That was enough for me.” As for other music, I’ve embedded a very nice cover of “Firework” by Charlie below. Unfortunately, the only video on his YouTube channel is an EPK, but you do hear snippets of “I Can’t Lie,” one of the songs from the aforementioned EP.
Editor’s Note: Check back for live blogs once the battle rounds begin on The Voice.

You know, Charlie Rey has the absolute heart pulling voice I’ve ever heard. Every song I’ve heard him sing so far, well makes me cry. He choses the most inspiring songs, that I’m sure touch the hearts of millions. It sure touched mine. I’m honored to be a fan of someone who aspires to do so much for his father. I can say I to have that same aspiration for my loving family. I truly hope that even if he doesn’t win, that he continues on this singing path that will one day take him to some place big. I hope he stays a good person, and never changes. Charlie Rey good luck. And know you have a fan in Upland, CA.
