His background: We didn’t really get to meet D.R. on the show, but his Voice website bio says D.R.’s dad was his first musical influence; they’d sing together in church. When his parents separated, D.R., a Cleveland native, lost contact with his dad. As we heard on the show, he became a teacher. In 2012, however, he headed to Japan for a six-month residency at a Motown bar in Nagoya.
What the show didn’t show:
* During a conference call with the media, D.R. said that residency gave him an opportunity to perform T
* The trip to Japan was hardly his first foray in music. Prior to that he was worship leader at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and part of a music group called The Funny Sound.
* Upon returning to the U.S., he landed a role in the ensemble for an off-Broadway production of “Dreamgirls.” He says he’s been in a few musicals since. Last year, he was in “The First Noel” at The Apollo.
* He also has a singing residency at the Red Rooster, a popular restaurant in Harlem.
* Last year, D.R. released a double single featuring the songs “Your Body” and “Anyway.”
* D.R. says his favorite singer of all time is Pavarotti, His musical inspirations also include Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.
