Her audition: Daria Jazmin, 27, of Los Angeles, Calif., auditioned with Meghan Trainor’s “Dear Future Husband.” Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani turned during a blind audition that was part of a montage package. Daria opted to join Team Pharrell.
Her background: We didn’t get to meet Daria on the show, but her Voice bio tells us she’s the youngest of four girls and grew up singing with them. After she graduated from high school, the sisters formed a group with Daria as the lead singer. They got some radio play for their debut EP and spent a year during a radio tour, “but not much came of it,” according to The Voice.
What the show didn’t show: The group is called The Jazmin Sisters with Nadia, Felicia and Celia as the other members. According to their website, that group’s name was inspired by the sisters’ jazz influence and the Asian Jasmine flower, which symbolizes happiness. That bio also describes Daria as the sister with the big voice — “making her the ‘Michael’ of their ‘Jackson 4.'” And they’ve actually released a pair of EPs — “90’s Baby” in 2013 and “Keep on Livin'” last year.
Regardless of what happens on The Voice, Daria says “I don’t really see myself as leaving the group because I am related to them always, you know. We’re always going to be bonded. We’re sisters; we love each other.” In fact, she says her sisters helped encourage her to audition for the show. They were watching The Voice and talking about how they’d love to meet Pharrell. “And just watching it, I was like, ‘I’ve always wanted to try The Voice,’ and I was like, ‘You know what? Let me just try it and see what happens,’ and they’re like, ‘Yes, please do it.'”
As for that audition we didn’t get to see, Daria says she picked the Meghan Trainor song because it’s so fun and upbeat. The coaches who turned were her first three choices, but she says she’s looked up to Pharrell “all my life” and just had to pick him as her coach. “He was just saying my voice was interesting and he was just really looking forward to working with it and just really doing some cool things vocally. It was already a dream come true that he pushed his button for me,” Daria said in a conference call with the media.
I’ll be posting profile blogs on every singer who lands a spot on Season 9 of The Voice. For links to the others, head here. Keep checking back. There are many more to come.
On iTunes: The Jazmin Sisters released the five-song “90’s Baby” EP in 2013 and the five-track “Keep on Livin'” in 2014. They also released an EP of remixes of “You,” a single from the first EP.
Update:
Battle round: Lost to Darius Scott singing “Lean on Me” and was eliminated.
