Amy Brumfield, Season 11

Meet Hollywood bound Amy Brumfield

If you’re looking for an underdog to root for in Idol Season 11, look no further than Amy Brumfield.

The 24-year-old has a backstory we haven’t seen before on Idol, which is saying something in itself.

She and her boyfriend  lived in a tent in the woods near Gatlinburg, Tenn., at the time Idol held its Savannah auditions last summer because that’s all they could afford.

“We’re kinda struggling, major struggling,” she says. “”We can’t afford like a $100 a week hotel room. The only thing we can do is live in a tent in the woods.”

Nevertheless, she seemed upbeat about the situation, saying “life is awesome” and praising her boyfriend for picking up odd jobs to provide the necessities they need.

“I would rather be outdoors and happy than indoors and miserable,” she told Ryan Seacrest.

She also showed up in a pretty black dress and wearing jewelry provided by her boyfriend’s mom, admitting “I never dressed this nice in my whole life.”

After all that, she wowed the judges with a soulful version of Alicia Keys’  “Superwoman,” displaying one of the bigger female voices we heard in Wednesday night’s Season 11 premiere.

“The spirits and the children of the woods snuck into you, and I like that,” said Idol judge Steven Tyler.

Here’s Amy’s audition. Sorry, but I couldn’t find any pre-Idol music from her.
