Clayton Farhat, Season 11

Meet American Idol contestant Clayton Farhat

Clayton Farhat first appeared on stage at the age of 6 or 7.

And he remembers it well.  His grandfather played in a bluegrass band and bribed him with a $5 bill.

“Of course, when you’re 6 or 7, $5 is a lot of money,” Clayton says in his golden ticket interview.  “So I got up there and sang, ‘They’re Going To Put Me in the Movies’ to a bunch of older people.’

Clayton is 23 and from Dallas, Texas, and auditioned for Idol this year because, essentially, his college baseball career was over and he had time to do it.  He was an outfielder with the Lamar University team in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, he started 29 of the team’s 35 games, hitting .260 with one home run and 16 RBIs.

He says he thinks that experience makes him unique.

“There are a lot of guys out there who are athletes and don’t think it’s cool to do the whole singing thing,” he said. His philosophy: “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.”

His favorite Idol is rocker Bo Bice and his favorite Idol moment was when rock guitarist Zakk Wylde joined James Durbin on stage during Season 10.

Here’s the only video I could find of Clayton singing, with a group called The Time Machine.

“Highway to Hell”
