His background: For a living, Jamai delivers singing telegrams. “When I was in high school, it was just something to make some extra bucks on Valentine’s Day,” he explained to The Voice. “I just kept with it.” Today, Jamai has a full-service singing telegram company for all occasions, even breakups. At one job, a guy dressed up as a knight in shining armor and performed with Jamai. He says when he’s not working, he’s in the studio and practicing, “ready to take it to the next level.” His friend, Dre, calls him a new-age Bobby Brown.
What the show didn’t show:
* Jamai Springfield is from Chester, Pa., located between Philly and Wilmington, Del., and performs as simply Jamai. And he started that singing telegram business when he was just 16.
* He released a pair of singles in 2017, “Need U” and “Who I Gotta Screw (Sad Song).”
* A number of other songs are available through Bandcamp, including a 14-track album called “Lost in Your Love” from 2012. You can also check out several of the album tracks on his YouTube page.
* He clearly spends a lot of time in the gym and likes to sing and pose for photos minus a shirt (or part of a shirt) and perform in something like superhero garb. He calls himself “the unhuman entertainer experience.” Just check out his cover of Lady Gaga’s “You and I” below.
* Judging from his Twitter account, he also spends lots of time practicing guitar and is so serious about that he logs the hours — 533 in 2017 compared to 347 in 2016.
* On his Facebook page, Jamai says he took London “Deelishis” Charles from Season 2 of Flavor of Love to his senior prom in 2007.
* At a 2009 concert in Philly, Beyonce held out the mic to him at the end of one of her songs and he finished it. Really! There’s even a YouTube video to prove it.
* In 2015, Jamai toured in China, performing at 75 nightclubs around Shanghai, according to his bio on The Voice website.
On joining Team Alicia: During a conference call with the media, Jamai said among the coaches, “if there was anyone who I could personally connect myself with, it would have been Alicia Keys because in a lot of ways, culturally, for me, she’s been the soundtrack of my life. Every album, every part of Alicia Keys’ career, I can almost recount it. So, for me, that really sold me. And, I’m going to be honest, I could not believe how beautiful she was. And then the fact that when it was her turn to kind of persuade me, she really expressed that she was interested in my career outside of the show which is my ultimate priority.”
