Jazzy Mae, aka Jasmine Mae Humprhies, with the golden ticker she earned on her 20th birthday.
After receiving little or no air time in the early rounds, Idol showed her belting out Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpower and Lead” during the Showstopper round.
At least she was belting it out until she lost the lyrics. The performance spelled the end of her time on Season 23.
Jazzy Mae is the stage name for Jasmine Mae Humphries, 20, from Union, South Carolina. She’s a student at the Petrie School of Music, Converse University in Spartanburg, S.C.
And while she doesn’t appear to have released music, she’s posted impressive originals to social media, including “Your World,” “Lovers Lane” and “Cause of Her.”
The latter, written about her mother, was Jazzy’s audition song. And it sure sounds like the type of moment Idol typically loves to share.
Why? Well, Jazzy sang the song with her mother in the room. And her audition in front of the judges in New York City fell on her 20th birthday.
Jazzy reveals on social media that she got three “yeses” for a golden ticket and “they even sang Happy Birthday to me.”
Jazzy had a large birthday sign with her. Ryan Seacrest signed it. Then the family ran through the sign in celebration for the TV cameras.
None of which aired. But Jazzy Mae says she’s still grateful for the experience and the memories, calling it “the most monumental moment of my career and my life.
“I have been singing ever since I was a little girl and NEVER thought this opportunity would happen to me,” Jazzy writes on social media.
“I can remember singing in church behind the pulpit, singing in the Sims choir, playing gigs for years, and finally writing and playing my own music to the world. Last August, I was recruited to try out, and I was ecstatic.”
The self-described small-town girl raised on ’90s country admits her Showstopper performance didn’t go as planned, but still calls the Idol experience “such a blessing.”
“The nerves were real, the stress was intense, and I gave it everything I had … By the way, I’m just getting started, so y’all stick around for the ride!!!”
