Jordis Unga, Season Two Contestants, The Voice

Meet Jordis Unga of The Voice (Team Blake)

Jordis Unga started her music career in a punk rock band.

Now she’s a member of Team Blake on The Voice.

If it doesn’t sound like a perfect match, consider that Jordis had her choice of Blake, Christina Aguilera or Cee Lo Green after auditioning with “Maybe I’m Amazed.”

The only judge who didn’t spin around during her performance was Adam Levine.

She felt like Blake was the best fit.

“In my career, I’ve done lot of different things and explored a lot of different genres,” she says in her post-audition interview with The Voice. “Before I came on this show, I really went back to my roots, which is soul and things that come naturally to me. The basis of all of that is country. And I think he (Blake) understands my voice and my vision.”

Well, at least well enough that Jordis also survived the battle rounds, defeating rocker Brian Fuente when the two dueled on the song “Ironic.”

Jordis, 29, grew up in Minnesota and credits her parents — her dad is from Tonga — with introducing her to music. On her MySpace bio, she says she’s held lots of different jobs, working in bars, restaurants and even as a house painter one summer, but has always remained involved in music.

She says she spent four or five years in a punk rock band called “The Fighting Tongs” with some friends in the St. Paul area; then the group scaled down to a smaller group called “The Liars Club,” which was more of a pop band.

She’s now living in Los Angeles and working on her own music. To date, she’s released just one song to iTunes, “The Man Who Sold the World,” from 2005.

That was one of the songs she performed when she competed on Rock Star INXS, essentially a reality competition to become the new lead singer for INXS. Fifteen singers competed; at 23, Jordis was the youngest. She wound up placing fifth.

If you’d like to hear more of her music, head to that MySpace page where you can still find four older songs, including that single and a cover of “Imagine.”

Jordis gets to me. Something about her folk/rock voice expressing a bit of anguish. To me, her voice is ideal for singing Dylan/Lennon soulful tunes, telling a story. Love “Try Not”.
