Mathai, Season Two Contestants, The Voice

Meet Mathai of The Voice (Team Adam)

4

Mathai is the teenager who should be studying to be a pediatrician.

After all, her father is a psychiatrist.  Her mother is a nurse.  Her brother is studying to become a doctor.

Mathia, 19, figured she’d pursue a career in medicine as well.

At least until her senior year in high school, when she tells pegasusnews.com of Dallas-Fort Worth that she woke up one day and decided she had to sing.

Not that singing was entirely new to the New York native, who moved to Coppell, Texas, and now lives in the Atlanta, Ga., area.

Sharon Mathia — she’s going by just Mathai on The Voice — was a member of the high school show choir and grew up singing in church.

In fact, she recalls the first time she sang in church, at the age of 3.

“Everyone was shocked to hear something coherent come out of a 3-year-old’s mouth,” she recalls.  “My mom signed me up for voice lessons when I was 5, and I’ve been signing ever since.”

And singing well enough that this is her second televised singing competition.  Pegasusnews.com also reports that she made the top 20 in the Glee Project.

On The Voice, she auditioned with “Rumor Has It”  and wound up having to choose between Team Blake and Team Adam after a performance some referred to as “sassy.”

That description makes her blush, Mathai admits in her blog for The Voice.

“Because I am such a nerd,” she writes.  “I was always the anything-but-sassy girl in high school.  The bookworm.  The kid who asked way too many questions.  The kid who wore thrift back when it was weird to wear thrift.”

But, who knows, she concludes.

Perhaps sassy is her on-stage persona.

You can judge by yourself by watching her audition again below, where you’ll also find a couple of non-The Voice performances.

Here’s a link to Mathai’s Facebook page.  And, if you want to follow her on Twitter, she’s mathaimusic.
