His audition: Matt New, 29, of Midland, Texas, “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee. He immediately showed off a nice tone and impressive range. Kelly Clarkson turned in early in the performance. Gwen Stefanie soon followed suit. And Matt enticed a third chair turn in John Legend on the very last note. Gwen complimented Matt on his star power. John called his audition “an enjoyable listen.” With the input of his family, Matt opted to join Team Legend.

* Matt told The Voice he started singing in church. During high school, he led worship for the youth group every Wednesday night. He said that’s where he decided he wanted to do music full time.

* Those plans changed when his girlfriend Kylie got pregnant when Matt was 18. The couple got married, but that meant that Matt had to put his dream of music on hold to provide for his family, which now includes two young sons.

* The first two years of marriage were really tough, Matt said, and he worked a variety of random jobs to make ends meet. ut things have gotten better. Matt and a buddy opened a gym and that’s also freed him up to “pursue music more.”

* On his website, Matt explains his view of music this way: “I have a dream and vision to create music that creates moments for all people. I view my passion and craft as a channel from Creator God to his created people. My aim is to write music that inspires and lyrics that are authentic and relatable.”

* Matt explained this way to Voice Views: “I’m not necessarily a Christian artist, I’m an artist who’s a Christian. In other words, I don’t specially do the Christian genre. My sound is a conglomeration of John Mayer, Coldplay, soul with some pop vibes. Or at least that’s what I’m shooting for. I want to write meaningful lyrics with a good groove.”

* To date, his only released music consists of three Christmas covers released back in 2017.

* But that’s about to change. Matt says he’s planning to release a single called LA as soon as he can once his time on The Voice ends. He’s also working on a pop single with his wife Kylie and they’re shooting a music video for that song as well. “It’s a banger for sure,” Matt promises. “All that followed by a full EP! I can’t wait to release those for the world to hear who I am.”
