Sarah Day of American Idol Season 23

Idol kicked off its 23rd season on March 9 with Carrie Underwood joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie at the judges’ table.

A final audition episode will air Sunday on ABC. Then golden ticket recipients will compete for the right to advance during Hollywood Week. Those episodes begin airing Monday.

Here’s more about Sarah:

* She’s Sarah Dyckerhoff, a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Calgary in Alberta, Canada, and one of at least four Canadian musicians we could meet on Sunday’s show.

* She’s spent time in Nashville pursuing music and released what appears to be her only single to date in September 2023. It’s a love song called “Oxygen” that you can check out below.

* Sarah’s also featured on a brand new release, a song called “Need You.” It’s a collaboration with Chrome Harvest, which makes “folk songs for prairie goths.”

* Sarah told the Calgary Herald that she enrolled in nursing school last fall, but dropped out midway through the first semester because her heart wasn’t in it.

* She spent last summer working on her best friend’s elk farm, which also helped convince her to leave nursing school, Sarah says in a short she posted to YouTube.

* The next day, she auditioned for American Idol and wound up returning to Nashville to perform in front of the show’s celebrity judges.

* She’s now teaching voice and piano at Piano Expressions in Calgary.

* Sarah told the Herald that she comes from a family of musicians and began taking piano lessons herself at age 6.

* She performed in church growing up and also had training in classical singing.

* Sarah added that the Idol audition “caught me right at the right moment. Even if it’s just an internal motivation, to use it to be like, ‘I’m still writing, I’m still an artist. This is something that is still part of my life.’”
