Miley Cyrus watched Moriah Formica struggle to figure out what to do with her hands during rehearsals.

Then Miley decided to have the young rocker play her guitar during the battle round match with Shilo Gold.

That little change made a big difference, Moriah told Voice Views this week.

“I mean it’s just a part of me,” she said of her electric guitar. “When I’m onstage, I can do a song without my guitar, but it just feels wrong.

“I think other people think it looks wrong too, because I don’t know, it’s just a part of me. It’s who
I am. I love to play guitar. It really helps me get into the groove of the song and helps me move the way Moriah moves, you know.”

Just 16 when she auditioned for Season 14, Moriah is attempting to become the first female rocker to win the show.

She’s off to a blazing start. She turned four chairs with her blind audition performance of “Crazy On You.” She got rave reviews for her battle round performance of “American Woman” that aired Monday night.

She advanced following that battle; Shilo did not.

But Moriah said they had fun putting the performance together and she loved the way their voices sounded together.

And while some Voice contestants said the duets proved challenging because they’re used to performing solo, Moriah said her experience from performing in rock bands might have given her a bit of an advantage.

Yes, she was only 16 when she auditioned, but she’s been performing in bands since she joined The Modern Day Music Program at age 11.

“I’m used to interacting with my band mates on stage,” Moriah told Voice Views. “So it felt natural to me to interact with Shilo on the stage. And I just ultimately had a lot of fun.”

Editor’s note: Both Moriah and Shilo have already released music you can buy and download. Check out a Season 13 Pre-Voice discography, complete with a 25-song playlist, here.
