Idols on the Music Chart, Lee DeWyze

Music charts: Lee’s debut album plummets to 93

If yawns can be deafening, this one might have jolted Lee DeWyze right out of slumberland.

The new Idol’s debut album already set Idol marks for lowest debut (number 19) on the Billboard 200 by a winner and fewest first-week sales (39,000) for a finalist.

This week: “Live It Up” tumbled all the way from 19 to 93 on the Billboard 200.

Ouch.

Let’s put this in perspective.

Last year this time, I was writing about Kris Allen having the worst debut yet for an Idol winner.

But his album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200. And during consecutive weeks in December, it checked in at number 35, 55, 61 and 56.

It wasn’t until Jan. 8 that the album dipped to 91. In week two, Lee’s album has already dropped lower than that.

And the first single — “Sweet Serendipity” — has yet to crack the Hot 100.

Not the start Idol envisioned for its season nine winner, I’m sure.

Other highlights on the charts this week (I’ll post the full rundown this evening):

* Carrie Underwood’s “Mama’s Song” continues its slow advance on the country singles chart, reaching a new peak position of number eight. “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry is perched atop that chart.

* Fresh off her two Grammy nominations, Fantasia’s “I’m Doin’ Me” also reaches a new peak, on the R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart. It’s number 14, up one spot from last week.

* Daughtry’s “Leave This Town” has fallen out of the Billboard 200 for the first time since its release 72 weeks ago. The album didn’t sell as well as Chris’ post-Idol debut. But I’m sure most artists/bands would be quite satisified with a “sophomore slump” that’s as successful as their second album has been.

* Duet with Jason Aldean on his “My Kinda Party” album.
