Dave Fenley and Keith Paluso said they knew they’d have to rework a classic country hit to make their battle round on The Voice a success.
So they put their own spin on George Jone’s “One Women Man” when they took the stage for Team Blake Shelton.
Their battle round match wound up working as well as one can on The Voice.
Dave was declared the winner, guaranteeing him a spot in the knockout round as a member of Team Blake.
And Adam Levine stole Keith for his team after being blocked from landing the singer during the blind auditions.
During a conference call with the media, both singers told Voice Views rearranging the song was crucial, especially for Keith, who described himself as coming from more of a “bluesy, funk, jam band” than country background.
“When we first started arranging the song, it was obvious that I wasn’t really comfortable with the original style that the song was in and that we needed to make some changes,” Keith said.
Added Dave: “I think the key was actually taking that old song that we had and making it current. Make it something that America could get involved with and people could listen to and get excited about. I think by taking that song and kind of making it really fresh, it gave us both a chance to shine and I was ecstatic.”
The fact that Dave won the battle put Keith on the verge of elimination. And Keith said he wasn’t sure about his chances of being stolen, though he knew Adam still had a steal to use.
“I wasn’t really thinking about it because I knew that I had done my best and that I’ve already learned so much through this experience that I’m just grateful to have gone through it,” he said.
“And so, I was kind of okay with whatever happened. And it just ended up being a pleasant surprise. It’s great, and I think no matter what coach you’re working with, any of us can learn from any of those coaches, and just be grateful for the opportunities you get.”
Dave said he was thrilled to see that their hard work paid off — for both of them, not just him.
“What they didn’t show was me almost running back on stage to give Keith another hug after he got stolen because I was so tickled for him and I knew that we both had worked so hard at that point to make that song and bring it to life, and I was just over the moon that he got stolen at that point.”
Dave, 40, of Nashville, joined Team Blake Shelton after turning two chairs with his blind audition performance of Travis Tritt’s “Help Me Hold On.”
Keith, 30, of Memphis, Tenn., also turned two chairs in the blinds, performing “Way Down We Go” by Kaleo.
The knockout round begins Monday on The Voice.
