Next up on Idol: Lee DeWyze and the Black Eyed Peas

Lee DeWyze will return to American Idol next week. (AP Photo)American Idol just announced details about next week’s show.

First off, guest performers on Thursday’s results show will include Lee DeWyze and the Black Eyed Peas.

Second, the week’s theme for the 12 remaining contestants will be “Songs from the Year They Were Born.”

That’s an oft-used theme on Idol.

What I like about it is that it will once again allow the contestants to sign whatever style of music they are good at.

I don’t necessarily need to see Scotty McCreery sing disco or Naima Adedapo sing country music. I mean, what’s the point? It would have nothing to do with the music they’ll record and perform after the show.

As for the Black Eyed Peas, they’ve appeared on Idol before, including in last year’s Idol Gives Back special when Fergie donned snakeskin and the acoustics were awful. Here’s hoping for better this time around. On the acoustic front, that is.

Lee can use whatever boost Idol can deliver. His debut single — remember “Sweet Serendipity” — didn’t enjoy any sort of sweetness on the music charts.  His album debuted at 19 on the Billboard 200 — the lowest yet for an Idol winner — plummeted to 93 the next week and disappeared from the chart in a heartbeat.
