Well, except for that short-lived little fuss over a Tony Lucca song last year.

American Idol seems to be taking the opposite approach.

At this point, who needs contestants? Just let Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey battle it out.

Mariah did an interview with Barbara Walters during which Mariah supposedly said she “doesn’t feel comfortable emotionally” after the dispute with Nicki earlier this week, but will continue with the show and has hired extra security.

And just when I think, ‘OK, this is all just a publicity ploy,” Nicki unleashes a Twitter tirade.

“Barbara walters didn’t reach out from our team, barbz,”she writes, addressing her fans. “I guess we’re too dangerous. Don’t shake if u don’t wannA get shook!!!! LmAooooooooooo

A couple tweets later, she adds: “I guess it hurts 2 have the producers tell u to ur face that nicki is the best judge we’ve had since simon. Awww, poor u. Keep them lies cmn.”

And then: “Tried to keep quiet but let’s go!!!!”

Let’s just say if this is all a ratings ploy, Nicki is certainly playing her part.
