And a funny thing happened the morning after an Idol results show.
Outrage did not sweep across the Idol nation.
There weren’t calls for recounts. Calls for the judges to finally judge something (though that would still be merited). Or rants about how Idol is unfair to females (though it still is).
I’m sure Paul McDonald fans were disappointed. But all in all, Idol fans too his ouster in stride.
Which means Nigel Lythgoe must have been wrong.
We won’t be shocked every week over an Idol elimination.
What are people twittering about this morning?
Well, many would love to be able to download a version of that duet of “Moaning” that Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart performed last night. (So I’ve embedded it below.)
That tells us two things.
First, it would have been an absolute shame to send Haley home after she sounded so great on that song. Hey, folks, “Piece of My Heart” wasn’t a fluke. The lady just needs the right song.
Second, Idol has stumbled upon a results show format that works. And should stick with it.
Look, this season is supposed to be about the contestants, so let them sing. As often as possible.
Ditch the results show filler and send them out there every week to perform as duets, groups, whatever.
Last night’s results show was entertaining. Last week’s was a disaster.
Here’s another piece of good news about next week’s shows (meaning in addition to the announcement that David Cook and Katy Perry will perform).
The Idols will tackle songs from the 21st Century.
That’s right folks, current music.
Enjoy. It doesn’t happen that often on Idol.
Coming later today: An exit interview with Paul.
Now, more photos from last night’s show.
