Idols on the Music Chart, Phillip Phillips

Phillip Phillips’ ‘Home’ is a Hot 100 hit

Phillip Phillip’s might not think “Home” is representative of the type of music he’ll record post-Idol, but the song is a hit on Billboard.

The song debuted at number 10 on the Hot 100 this week with 278,000 downloads.

That’s the best performance for an Idol coronation song since David Cook of Season 7 landed at number three with “The Time of My Life” in 2008, Billboard said.

Kris Allen’s “No Boundaries” and Scotty McCreery’s “Love You This Big” both debuted at number 11 the week after their American Idol wins.

Despite universal praise from the judges and Idol watchers (me included), Phillip didn’t seem overly thrilled with the song when he addressed the media a day after being crowned the Season 11 champ.

He said this of the first single: “I wanted to do one of my own songs that I’ve written. Just in the short amount of time we couldn’t really do it with recording live and everything. It’s a good song, but it’s not really something I would write, but I’m glad people liked it because it was a good song and a good writer.”

Later in the interview, he added: “It’s a little too pop for me. I don’t really put in any oh, oh, ohs, you know, oh-oh-oh. But it’s a very good song, and I’m glad people like it. I’m a little more rock than that and so hopefully people will enjoy what I have to put out — some jazz rock stuff.”

Honestly, Phillip should feel fortunate he didn’t get stuck with a turkey like “No Boundaries.”

Or with the crappy “Change Nothing” tune Jessica Sanchez had to sing just before he took the stage on the final performance night.

But it sounds like the planning sessions for that first Phillip Phillips album might be interesting.
