Let’s see, we had three singers in the Top 10 on iTunes as of 8 a.m.
We had three singers — and not all the same ones — at number one on iTunes genre charts.
And we had five singers crack the Top 20 on iTunes.
Yeah, you could say the Monday night performances on The Voice were well received.
For my song by song grades, head here. For a look at where everyone landed on iTunes, head here.
Now, my look at what’s likely to happen tonight.
No need to worry: Honestly, Matt McAndrew’s cover of “The Blower’s Daughter” wasn’t my favorite vocal of the night. But 30 seconds in, I knew that performance would be marvelously received by his fan base. This morning, only Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” was standing between him and number one on the iTunes singles chart.
Then there’s Taylor John Williams. Pharrell was the more sought after of the new Voice coaches during the blind auditions. But Gwen has done a much better job of song selection/approval. “Royals” was as brilliant for Taylor John as “All About That Bass” was for Anita Antoinette. And Taylor John made it work.
Shouldn’t have to worry: I’m not sure “Take It Easy” was exactly what Craig Wayne Boyd needed to do on Top 8 night, as Blake Shelton tried to imply. But he showed how ready for prime time he is by doing his best with a song that might have been a little too easy going for a night with so much at stake.
Damien might have the best voice of any guy in the Top 8. He hasn’t gotten as much hype as his Team Adam colleagues, but a glance at iTunes this morning tells me viewers recognize his talent. That cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You” had a few too many frills for my taste, but was still pretty darn special.
Heartthrob factor: I’m probably harder on Chris Jamison than I should be. The guy has a fine voice; he’s certainly improved as a performer. But his treatment on the show reminds me of Season 8 of American Idol, which is when the show started to go into the toilet. Suddenly male hotness was more important than music, and talented females were cast aside way too early in favor of cute guys. Sound familiar? Take a look at the Top 8. Remember, this is supposed to be about the voice. Heck, that’s the name of the show.
Which leaves: York’s DaNica Shirey, Luke Wade and Ryan Sill in the bottom three on a night when four artists will sing for an instant save and three will go home. If Chris lands in the bottom four with this trio, DaNica deserves the save. Not because of her performance last night — I did not like “These Dreams” as a song choice — but because of the incredible voice she’s displayed throughout the competition.
Check back at 8 p.m. I’ll be live blogging the results show and providing song by song grades when the save songs begin.
Hey, and we get to hear from Christina Grimmie, who has released her first post-Voice single, and from RaeLynn, who will perform in York later this month.
