So, it turns out American Idol still has hit-making potential.

Thursday night, Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips showed up on the Idol stage to sing his new single.

Just before the show, “Raging Fire” was sitting at number 49 on iTunes Top 200 singles.

This morning, at 12:30 EST, the song was at number 6.

That’s quite a jump, but not altogether surprising given the song and Phillips fine performance of it.

It turned out to be the highlight of Thursday’s results.

Heck, forget Thursday’s show. It was the highlight of the week on American Idol, since the Top 12 failed to deliver a single dazzling performance.

I wasn’t alone in my enthusiasm for Phillips’ new song.

Melinda Doolittle, the Season 6 Idol standout, continues to follow every episode as a part of the TV Line team.

Her tweet after Phillip sang: “Absolutely loved this performance by @Phillips! Great song! I mean, GREAT!!!!”

So, if you missed it the first time around, here it is.
