Live voting and a Disney theme come to American Idol on Sunday night.
But, by the end of the night, two members of the Top 10 will be heading home.
Here are my rankings of the American Idol Top 10.
The number in parenthesis is last week’s ranking for each contestant.
1. Laci Kaye Booth (1): Laci should keep taking risks and adopt a do-or-die approach to every performance. That sultry, raspy voice of hers is Idol’s greatest Season 17 find. But while she’s my favorite among the Top 10, I doubt she’s America’s favorite. Yet.
2. Madison VanDenburg (4): That powerful performance of “Fallin'” on Top 14 night was flat-out one of the best vocals we’ve seen in Season 17. Voters wound up sending just two ladies to the Top 10. Fortunately, they recognized Madison’s talent.
3. Laine Hardy (6): Idol started billing him as a heartthrob in Season 16 and hasn’t let up since. But don’t discount Laine as an artists. Those were two self-assurred performances on Top 14 week, and his “Hurricane” cover was my favorite Laine vocal so far.
4. Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon (10): My only complaint about the original (“Almost Heaven”) he performed on the Top 14 results show is that it isn’t available on iTunes. Just the latest in a run of excellent vocals from Jeremiah, who should excel with the Disney theme.
5. Uche (2): Yes, Lionel, you can get great vocals and great showmanship. Adam Lambert, Idol’s Season 8 runner-up, would be Example A. Uche delivered both on Top 14 results night, but his showmanship has sometimes gotten in the way of his vocals.
6. Alejandro Aranda (3): He’ll almost certainly finish higher than this. And he’s doing it again on YouTube. His Top 14 night performance has been viewed 1 million times; his results night original, “Cholo Love,” nearly 450,000. Both are tops among the Top 10.
7. Dimitrius Graham (5): He studied opera and I’d certainly put him in the same class as Jeremiah vocally. But Idol fans didn’t vote him into the Top 10, so he stil has something to prove to them. If they give him time, I think he’ll prove them wrong.
8. Alyssa Raghu (8): Will the fact that Alyssa was one of only three ladies to make the Top 10 help her cause? What would likely help more is if she could deliver a true moment on stage. She’s been solid so far, but she hasn’t had one of those magical moments yet.
9. Wade Cota (7): “Simple Man” was a better fit for Wade’s gruff voice than “Trouble.” A key will be whether Wade can find a Disney-themed song well suited to that voice. He benefits from having the male rock lane all to himself on Season 17.
10. Walker Burroughs (14): Finding a song to fit his diverse musical taste should not be a problem for the guy Katy has dubbed Harry Potter. But I would have put another of the ladies — Ashley Hess or Riley Thompson — in this spot.
