Early in his first stint on The Voice, Adam Levine was declared king of the four-chair turn.
He might be destined to claim that title again.
Returning to the show after a 10-year hiatus, Adam lured both artists who turned four chairs during the Season 27 premiere.
Those singers were Grace Miller-Moody from Florence, S.C., who opened Monday’s show, and Ethan Eckenroad from Roaring Springs, Pa., who closed it.
In between, rookie coach Kelsea Ballerini found a new use for the coach’s replay button.
In the past, it’s only been used on singers who failed to turn a chair.
Kelsea used it after two fellow coaches had already turned for talented New York-based singer Dan Kiernan.
Then she made it pay off by convincing him to join her team.
Also earning spots on the show during the Season 27 premiere were Iris Herrera, Renzo, Jaydn Cree, Darius J., Angie Rey and Carlos Santiago.
Renzo previously competed on American Idol as Dennis Lorenzo and finished Top 10. Jaydn is the daughter of Season 25 Voice finalist Bryan Olesen.
Here’s a recap with Voice Views picks for the best performances of the night.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Renzo, 33, Philadelphia, Pa., performed “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynryd. He lovely rendition of the song prompted a quick chair turn from John Legend. Michael Buble turned as well. So did Adam, only to learn he’d been blocked by John. Renzo completed a wonderful performance, but couldn’t quite entice Kelsea Ballerini to turn. John liked the fact that he performed an unexpected song for someone with an R&B background. Renzo opted to join Team Legend.
RUNNERS-UP
Iris Herrera, 19, Newaygo, Michigan, performed “You Are My Sunshine.” She delivered an amazing opening, earning quick chair turns from John Legend, Michael Buble and Kelsea Ballerini. That was wonderful turn-around from her first audition in Season 26 when she failed to turn a chiar. Kelsea loves the connection she made with her soulful and infectious vocals. Michael called her successful return to the show “the coolest thing ever.” John called it a four-chair turn performance and noted he turned first. Iris decided to join Team Kelsea.
Grace Miller-Moody, 20, Florence, S.C., performed “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5. Her soulful tone prompted a quick chair turn from Michael Buble. Before Grace hit the chorus, all four coaches were facing in her direction. John said Grace kicked that song’s ass. Adam called her potential “limitless” and said she could win the show. Grace opted to join Team Adam.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
Jaydn Cree (Olesen), 23, Lincoln, Neb., sang “Still Into You” by Paramore. Michael Buble turned when she hit the chorus. When Jayden hit an impressive big note, Kelsea turned as well. John complimented her an a cool vocal that really stood out. Kelsea liked the pureness of her voice. Michael said he thinks Jaydn is a star and light just pours out of her. After consulting with her dad, Jaydn joined Team Michael.
Darius J., 35, Pahokee, Fla., performed “Caught Up” by Usher. His fun delivery earned quick chair turns from Adam Levine and Michael Buble. Kelsea Ballerini eventually turned as well. Michael complimented him on radiating light, love and charisma. John loved the way Darius flipped the song. And Adam loved the “electricity” in his performance. Kelsea said she’s the best entertainer she’s seen on the show so far. Darius joined Team Adam.
Angie Rey, 25, Seminole, Fla., performed “Penthouse” by Kelsea Ballerini. She sounded fabulous when she hit the chorus and that was all it took for Kelsea to turn her chair. As it turned out, only Kelsea turned. But is seemed like Kelsea was going to be Angie Rey’s pick anyway. Then Kelsea joined Angie Rey on stage to perform a snippet of the song.
Carlos Santiago performed “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. He earned a chair turn from Michael Buble who proclaimed “he’s got a good voice.” Carlos showed off his range later in the song, prompted Adam Levine to turn as well. Kelsea complimented him on a really cool voice. Adam said Carlos is clearly capable of delivery a powerful vocal. Carlos decided to join Team Michael.
Dan Kiernan, 33, of New York, performed “High Hopes” by Panic! at the Disco. Proclaiming he loved the song choice, Michael Buble turned almost instantly. After an impressive a cappella interlude, John Legend turned as well. John called it exciting and fun. Michael said he’s ton of fun to watch perform. Kelsea, saying she thinks Dan is fantastic and admitting she made a mistake, pushed her replay button. Moved by that move, Dan opted to join Team Kelsea.
Ethan Eckenroad of Roaring Spring, Pa., performed “Northern Attitude” by Noah Kahan. His impressive opening prompted quick chair turns from Adam Levine and Kelsea Ballerini. By the time the song ended, all four coaches were facing in his direction. Adam said Ethan’s voice is his favorite so far in the blind auditions. Kelsea said his performances marked the first time this season she felt like she was turning for someone performing at his show. John loved the soulfulness of his voice. Ethan joined Team Adam.
