Rookie coach John Legend paired up two of the three four-chair turns on his team in the battle round.

But both will continue on the show, Shawn Sounds as a part of Team Legend and Matthew Johnson under his new coach, Kelly Clarkson.

The background: Matthew, 25, of Jacksonville, Fla., auditioned with Kirk Franklin’s “I Smile” and turned four chairs. Shawn matched that feat, performing “All My Life” by K-C & Jo Jo.
The song: “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross
The feedback: A standing ovation is followed by praise from all of the coaches. Kelly Clarkson called them both phenomenal singers. Adam Levine labeled them incredible. John Legend complimented them on the energy they brought to the stage.
The outcome: John felt Shawn had a bit of an edge and awards him the victory. But Matthew isn’t going anywhere. Adam hits his steal button, quickly followed by Kelly. After they make their pitches, Matthew opts to join Team Kelly.
My take: That’s what happens when you pair up four-chair turns; one gets stolen. Complete with twirls from the big men on stage, this was a crowd-pleasing performance. After leaking it over the weekend, I’m just surprised that Teh Voice made it the first performance to air. Shouldn’t you start the show with something fans haven’t seen?
