You might say Gwen Stefani was pretty determined to land Sydney Sterlace for her team on The Voice.

Sydney had dazzled The Voice coaches with her cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License.” Turning all four chairs. At age 15.

So Gwen, fond of coaching young singers, introduced the singer to her new kitten, offering to name the former stray Sydney if the teenage Sydney agreed to join her team.

The ploy prompted Snoop Dogg to throw a yellow flag in her direction, claiming “illegal use of an animal.”

Gwen need not have fretted. While Sydney was open to joining another team if a coach said something that really connected with her, she told her local NBC affiliate that Gwen was always her first choice as coach.

Now the student from West Seneca High School will be Gwen’s representative in The Voice finals Monday night.

Sydney’s since turned 16. And while she hasn’t released music, she’s been singing most of her life. Singing the national anthem at a Buffalo Sabres NHL hockey game was her biggest performance prior to The Voice.

Wondering about the kitten? He’s now named Corn Shelton.

Here’s a look back at Sydney’s impressive run of performances on The Voice.
