Terrence Cunningham has established himself as one of the early front-runners on Season 14 of The Voice.

But he was quick to share credit for any battle round success he enjoyed with duet partner Livia Faith and with Voice coach Alicia Keys.

Terrence and Livia performed “Stars” by Grace Potter And The Nocturnals in the battle round. Their cover wound up being one of just three battle round songs from Season 14 to crack the Top 100 on the iTunes overall singles chart.

Alicia declared Terrence the winner of the battle, meaning he advances to the knockout round, which begins airing Monday night. Livia was eliminated from the show.

But she deserves a world of credit for turning the duet into a crowd-pleasing performance, said Terrence.

“We worked diligently and very hard,” he said during a conference call with the media. “And up until the very defining moment when they announced the winner, I knew we had equal footing across the board.

“It was completely neck and neck. I think there was even a poll online, and it came out down the middle. I’m grateful for making it to the next round, but I tip my hat to Livia for an amazing job.”

He also tipped his hat to coach Alicia, on two counts.

First, there was the song choice.

“I think it featured our voices so well together because we both have sort of a calming, haunting tone,” Terrence said.

And then there was her request that he perform the song on piano. That’s where he’s most at home, Terrence said, adding he thought it “made a world of difference” in how the duet turned out.

Terrence topped all Season 14 contestants on iTunes in the blind auditions with his cover of “My Girl.” But he said he’s not about to take anything on the show for granted.

“I never approach any situation with the confidence level of ‘Oh, I’ve got this in the bag.’ I think once that arrogance sets in, forces come against you. And you end up being put on your head.”
