As it turned out, a ninth-place finisher from Season 5 wound up being the only former American Idol contestant to win a Grammy Sunday night.
Two former Idol champs came away empty-handed.
The Season 5 contestant is Mandisa, who won her first-ever Grammy — for Best Contemporary Christian album (“Overcomer”).
Meanwhile, Fantasia’s “Sides Effects of You” lost Best Urban Contemporary Album to Rihanna’s “Unapologetic.”
Two of her songs, “Get it Right” and “Without Me,” were nominated, but the honors went to “Please Come Home” (Best Traditional R&B Performance) by Gary Clark Jr. and “Pusher Love Girl” (Best R&B Song).
Kelly Clarkson was nominated for her “Don’t Rush” duet with Vince Gill in the category of best country duo or group performance. The win went to “From This Valley” by the Civil Wars.
The big winners of the night were Daft Punk and collaborator Pharrell Williams, capturing four awards including top album and record of the year, and Lorde, who won two awards for her smash hit “Royals.”
