Some final thoughts, the morning after the Grammys …
Best Idol-related tweet about the Grammys
It came from season five contestant and Christian artist Mandisa. She wrote: “I already got my dress for the Dove Awards, but after seeing Lady Gaga, Cee-Lo and Nicki Minaj, I’m thinkin I might need to step it up.
A few minutes later, lest anyone take her seriously, she sent out a followup: “Some of y’all r so deep. I was kidding tweeps! I promise not to wear an egg, feathers or leopard print to the Dove Awards.”
If you missed Gaga’s egg, Nicki’s bizarre get-up or Cee-Lo’s outfit, head to the Idol Chatter Grammy photo gallery.
Best line of the night from an award winner
Train won the Grammy for best pop performance by a duo or group.
On the podium, frontman Patrick Monahan says: “Thanks, Justin Bieber, for not being a duo or group.”
Justin sure seemed to be everywhere on Grammy night. But a quick check of the winners’ list shows he came up empty-handed, thanks largely to Esperanza Spalding. So much for Bieber Fever at the Grammys.
Most informative red carpet interview
On E!, Ryan Seacrest nabbed Adam Lambert for a few moments, and they didn’t talk fashion.
Then talked about Adam’s second album. First, Adam said he has no idea what it will sound like. But he spelled out what he’s hoping for.
“It might be a little less campy,” he said. “Less rhinestones, more leather. That’s my mission this time around. Very heartfelt. That’s what we’re working on.”
Have no fear, Glam Nation fans. Adam’s amazing vocals will still be front and center.
Least informative red carpet interview
Poor Ryan. He clearly thought he had an exclusive red carpet interview set up with Lady Gaga.
Until she showed up in her egg. And refused to hatch until it was time for her Grammy performance.
Ryan was left speaking with an assistant, who babbled on and on about how Gaga was “incubating.”
Oh, well, when your new single just became the fastest selling ever on iTunes, I supposed red carpet interviews are optional.
Best performance of the night
John Mayer, Norah Jones and Keith Urban sounded amazing harmonizing on Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
It was the only time all night I went “wow” when the “wow” was based solely on the singing, as opposed to a Grammy antic.
Worst performance of the night
Bob Dylan. First, the music was so loud you couldn’t hear what he was singing. Then the words were too garbled to understand more than 20 percent of what he was singing.
Of course, it’s Dylan. What did we expect?
Idol fans could spot Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Lopez (looking phenomenal) on the Grammy red carpet. But the only Idol nominees besides Adam — Fantasia and Carrie Underwood — apparently missed the show.
Carrie usually dazzles at this affair. And wins, to the tune of five Grammys in four years between 2007 and 2010. She won best female country vocal performance three straight years before losing to Taylor Swift in 2010 and Miranda Lambert this year.
Fantasia got her first Grammy for best female R&B vocal performance (“Bittersweet”). Her manager accepted on her behalf, saying she’s busy working on preparations for the Mahalia Jackson movie she’s been cast in. She’ll star as the late American gospel singer and civil rights advocate.
“Fantasia’s been a long time waiting on this,” he said, referring to the Grammy, not the movie role in this instance. You can watch his acceptance speech below.
