The night the coaches got it all wrong on The Voice

0

Tuesday was the night creativity was not rewarded on The Voice.

Female pop artists Cami Clune and Marisa Corvo both took the stage with original arrangements of their chosen songs.

Both delivered.

But both lost their knockouts, though Cami was rescued by a Kelly Clarkson save.

And, with that, the lineup for the Season 19 playoffs is set. It includes:

Team Blake: Jim Ranger, Ian Flanigan, Worth the Wait, Sid Kingsley

Team Gwen: Carter Rubin, Joseph Soul, Payge Turner, Ben Allen

Team John: John Holiday, Bailey Rae, Tamara Jade, Chloe Hogan

Team Kelly: Tanner Gomes, Madeline Consoer, Cami Clune, Desz

MY RECAP FROM TUESDAY’S KNOCKOUT MATCHES

THE COACHES GOT IT WRONG

TEAM JOHN LEGEND

The matchup: John Holiday with “All By Myself” by Celine Dion vs. Cami Clune with “I Put a Spell on You” by Nina Simone.
The background: John turned three chairs in the blinds, then won his battle with Julia Cooper. Cami turned four chairs, then won her battle round match with James Pyle.
The feedback: Both singers received well-deserved high praise following superb vocals. Not a single coach gave a preference, though I think it’s clear from the comments and the pimp spot that The Voice views John Holiday as The Chosen One for Season 19.
The outcome: John Legend named John Holiday the winner; Kelly, thankfully, swooped in and saved Cami Clune.
My take: After 18 seasons, the number of Voice contestants who have achieved mega success after the show can still be counted on one hand. In my mind, Cami has more post-show commercial appeal. What’s more, in spite of all John Holiday’s vocal gymnastics, I enjoyed her performance more. She changed the song so dramatically, an old singing show standard came off as fresh, intriguing and made me want to hear more from this young lady.

TEAM KELLY CLARKSON

The matchup: Tanner Gomes with “Real Good Man” by Tim McGraw vs. Marisa Corvo with “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher
The background: Tanner turned three chairs, then won a battle over Skylar Mayton. Marisa turned three, then defeated Ryan Gallagher in the battles.
The feedback: Both singers received high praise. Blake was the only coach who offered up a choice. The country coach gave the edge to Marisa.
The outcome: Kelly awarded the win to Tanner, praising him for showing different sides of his talent after he delivered a fun, upbeat performance.
My take: Tanner did all that. But should that have trumped Marisa’s accomplishment? She took a baffling song choice, flipped it on it’s head and delivered in a big way, displaying range and vocal firepower to spare. That, coupled with a magnificent vocal in the battle round, would have had me awarding the win to Marisa.
