TV by the Numbers reports that the show earned a 1.0 rating among viewers 18-49 for Tuesday’s results show and a total viewership of just more than 7 million.
The show’s previous low rating was a 1.2, which came during a Season 15 results show and two episodes earlier this year.
Then there’s this: When The Voice and American Idol went head to head for the first time this year, the former won the ratings battle by a big margin — 1.7 among 18 to 49-year-olds to Idol’s 1.1.
When the final head-to-head episodes aired Monday, Idol had narrowed the gap to nearly nothing: 1.3 for The Voice, 1.2 for American Idol.
Again, it’s news that should surprise no one.
This spring, if you want to hear new artists perform, you tune in to American Idol.
If you want to hear coaches talk and talk and talk some more, you tune in to The Voice.
This week’s results shows were the perfect example.
On Top 10 reveal night, American Idol featured a new performance by each member of its Top 14.
On its first cross-battle results show, The Voice served up one musical performance in an hour — by coach John Legend — then milked results for 55 minutes when they could have been accomplished in 15.
Again, let me stress: Talent is not the problem.
The problem is the format.
That Monday results show marked the ninth time we’ve seen most members of the Idol Top 14 perform. And I can’t wait to see what Laci Kaye Booth and Uche do Sunday night.
Over on The Voice, I’m eager to hear another performance from Maelyn Jarmon, Lisa Ramey and Dexter Roberts. Among others.
But I needed Monday’s show to remind me how talented they are because we’ve only seen them perform three times And only twice as solo artists.
And we will tune in to Monday’s show knowing we WON’T get to see them perform again because The Voice will be airing the second half of the cross battles.
The Voice has been needlessly adding more gimmicks to its format season after season.
Looks like Carson and company have stumbled into a losing format.
And it’s not the least bit surprising that’s it’s showing in the ratings.

Maybe it’s because of this new change in the format, but, I thought that several of the contestants on The Voice were pitchy this week.
This season, “Idol” has dropped to its lowest ratings ever, too.
Where is your article about that?
I turned it off and cancelled my series recording the minute they cut Mendeleyev. Then I deleted the app. His voice was hypnotic for me and I, for the first time in years of watching, was looking forward to future episodes so I could hear more of a contestant. They lost me as a viewer.
FYI…ratings are dropping because of President Trump supporters like me and my family are sick of John Legend and his attacks and disrespect of our president. I used to watch The Voice but will not as long as he and KC are there.
