For the third straight week, The Voice and American Idol went head to head Monday night.

For the third straight week, The Voice won that battle.

But both show’s ratings dropped Monday night, with The Voice scoring its lowest ratings so far in Season 16.

The Voice’s rating among 19 to 49 year olds was 1.5, with a total estimated audience of 8.51 million, which was still good enough to win the Monday night ratings battle.

The show’s previous lows for Season 16 came the week before, with a 1.6 and 9 million viewers.

Idol wound up being the night’s third most popular show, trailing “The Voice” and FOX’s “9-1-1.” It had a 1.1 rating and about 6.21 million viewers.

The 1.1 was a Season 17 low; Idol’s audience low came two weeks ago when its first Monday episode of Season 17 drew just more than 6 million viewers.

The shows are head to head again next week. The Voice will continue its battle round; Idol will air part of its Top 20 in celebrity duets.

The 1.1 rating for “Idol” this week from what I’ve read elsewhere is a *series* low.

“The Voice’s” lesser drop may be due to some viewers’ goodwill towards John Legend (and/or blind loyalty to the other three coaches).

Meanwhile, ABC announced today that “Idol” will have a three-hour finale on 5/19 with live coast-to-coast voting.

With “Idol’s” main advocate, Channing Dungey, departed to Netflix, the season finale may actually be a fire sale.
