New Idol Music, Tim Urban

Tim Urban’s new EP, one song at a time

After all, he turned the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” into a reggae number. He raised eyebrows by sliding across the stage during his performance of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”

He had Ellen DeGeneres comparing him to a fourth shot of tequila — something that grows on you.

He had Simon Cowell pretty much throwing up his hands in frustration, admitting that regardless of what the judges said about his performances, voters loved his smile, so he was hanging around a while.

He hung around long enough to finish seventh and earn the right to perform on the American Idol summer tour.

And now he’s beating most of his colleagues to the punch when it comes to releasing post-Idol music.

Tim is releasing a six-track EP on iTunes this week in a rather unusual fashion, one song per day beginning Monday.

The first song is “Heart of Me,” and you can go here to hear it.

Among the other songs are “P.S.” and “Lullaby,” both of which you can listen to by visiting Tim’s MySpace Music page.

Now, look, I was hardly a fan of Tim’s version of “Under My Thumb.” In fact, I agreed with Simon when it came to most of his Idol performances.

But the guy has a decent voice. I knew that from checking out his MySpace after seeing his name on the list of Hollywood-bound contestants last Janaury.

Check out “Lullaby” in particular. I think you’ll be impressed.

It’s a lovely song and a very nice vocal.

And you won’t need four shots of tequila for it to grow on you.
