Season 11, Season 11 finale

Ugh! Now Idol cuts the voting show to one hour

I doubt I’ll ever figure out American Idol.

All year long, Nigel Lythgoe and company made us endure two-hour performance shows.

Complete with in-show commercials.   Complete with fashion tips.   Complete with group numbers that came off as though they’d barely been rehearsed.

Now we get to the final performance show of the season and Idol is scaling it back to one hour (8 p.m. tonight).

During that hour, we’ll hear Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips sing a song selected by Idol creator Simon Fuller.  They’ll each reprise their favorite performance from the past year.

And they’ll each sing their “individual” first single.

That’s six songs in an hour.  Certainly doable.

But I remember the Idol one-hour final Idol performance shows from Season 9 and Season 10.

Both came off as rushed.

And, if there’s one show you don’t want to feel rushed, isn’t it the night the final two are singing for America’s votes for a last time?

I mean, if anything, tonight would be a great time to celebrate how Jessica and Phillip got this far.

Let them bask in the glory of what they’ve accomplished for a while.  Let us relive it with them.

Like I said, I doubt I’ll ever figure out American Idol.

Editor’s Note: Check back at 8 p.m. I’ll be live blogging the Idol performance show with song by song grades.
