He prompted an early chair turn from Blake Shelton. As the audition wound to a close, Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine turned as well. Blake said he recognized “true greatness” in Paxton. And despite a pre-audition preference for Pharrell, Paxton decided to join Team Blake. Paxton said the fact that Blake turned around first and the “greatness” comment made the difference.

His background: Paxton says he’s loved music since he was a kid and was obsessed with Michael Jackson. He started dancing to improve his performances and says that, at age 17, his dance career “took off.” He was doing music videos and tours, working with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears, he says. “But seeing the artist singing and all the love they were receiving back — I wanted that so bad and I realized that was the actual dream.” He’s been writing, singing and performing for the past three years, struggling to break out as a singer. In the meantime, he teaches hip-hop classes.

What the show didn’t show:

  • Pre-Voice, Paxton was teaching dance at Showstopper Dance Studio. which he describes as a no-judgment “place where kids can learn dance at a whole different level.”
  • His work with Britney Spears came as an extra in a commercial, according to his bio on The Voice website. He calls the experince “so unbelievable … I was speechless.”
  • In a 2012 video interview, Paxton says: “My guilty pleasure song to dance to is any country song. Deep down inside I’m a country boy.” Perhaps another reason he chose Blake.
  • In the same interview, Paxton also says he enjoys modeling. “I’ve always loved modeling. I don’t know why. It’s pretty embarrassing.”
  • If you’d like to hear some of Paxton’s original music, head to this Soundcloud page. The music falls into the pop/R&B/dance genre. “Give It All” is especially impressive.
  • He also sings at his local church in Miami, according to The Voice website.
  • Being part of a large production as a dancer was always lots of fun, Paxton said in a conference call with the media. But being the center of attention as a singer auditioning for The Voice — not to mention the first singer featured in Season 10 — “is like the ultimate feeling.”
  • On iTunes: His performance from The Voice, plus a single called “Body Shakes” that he released last June. You can check it out below.
