Alex Kanaday of American Idol Season 24
Idol returns to ABC on Monday, Jan. 26, with the coaching trio of Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

* She’s an 18-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist who hasn’t released music yet, but has lots of impressive originals on her social media sites.
* Alex is a graduate of Mortimer Jordan High School in Kimberly, Ala., and is studying commercial music and songwriting at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
* Her music is influenced by bluegrass, Americana, contemporary worship music and pop, according to a recent performance bio.
* That bio also indicates that Alex got her start singing in church, something she’s been doing for more than 10 years.
* Speaking of Alex’s original, she shared what she calls her “favorite and most special song I’ve ever written” to social media sites on Dec. 2.
* The song is called “Paintin’ the Sky” and could be a dedication to her late father, who passed away over the summer. In a touching Instagram post, Alex calls him her “biggest fan.”
* On TikTok, Alex writes: “Hands down, the best feeling in the world: Playing my little songs in front of a crowd (no matter how big or small). I pray I never take these moments for granted.”
* Alex announced her Idol audition in late November, writing: “Feels like a fever dream to say I auditioned for American Idol. Feeling so, so grateful and undeserving of this incredible opportunity.”
