Viewers of The Voice are going to hear a lot of talk about “Cut Week” during the upcoming battle round episodes.
That’s because winners of the battles — and the four stolen artists — won’t advance to the knockout round as in past seasons.
They’ll advance to the new “Cut Week.” During “Cut Week,” the following will happen.
* Each coach will automatically advance two artists to the live shows.
* The remaining five artists from each team will perform, hoping to secure the team’s third spot in the live shows. I imagine the coach will make that decision.
* That will leave 12 artists advancing to the live shows and 16 artists in danger of elimination. At which point fans will vote an additional singer into the Top 13.
My biggest regret with this new format is that The Voice opted to eliminate the knockout round instead of the battle round.
Honestly, The Voice battle round is a joke and has been season after season. Artists wind up with mismatched partners. Artists wind up singing ill-suited songs.
The show’s dirty little secret is that the coaches use their saves so quickly, most battle round losers don’t even have a chance for one.
And from a viewers’ standpoint, the ratio of yacking versus music is absolutely ridiculous.
The last two points have been a problem during the knockouts as well. But at least singers get to pick their songs. And sing solo.
Which is a helluva lot more informative when you’re picking a Voice winner than knowing whether a contestant can sing harmonies.
